The choir and congregation of the parish of Our Lady Of Perpetual Succour sings with one voice and heart, as we give thanks to God for his faithful servant, Rev Fr Paul Goh and 50 years of service in the priestly ministry. Ordained on the 20th Dec 1969, Fr Paul also holds the record of being the first priest to be ordained in this parish. He also served this parish in the early 2000s. Thank you Fr Paul Goh for your service to the church of Singapore.

Author's Note

The parish of OLPS recently signed for this famous retreat called Conversion Experience Retreat led by his Grace, William Goh. It was what you will termed a charismatic retreat with plenty of praise and worship and the song above was one of those we sang with plenty of of hand actions. So those who knew the actions taught their fellow choir members during practice. A great way to bring life to the ancient words of the "Shema Yisrael + V'ahavta " taught by Moses to the people in the desert

Every time I hear or sing this hymn, and ponder on the archaic lyrics, those Ancient Greek text translated into English, I am totally awestruck by the imageries to comes to my mind. The Whole Universe ... Marvelling at the work of our God .. worshipping Him in Nothing but Silent dumbfounded amazement. To the greatness of WHO /WHAT our God is, and what he has done. Coming to Earth.. born to human flesh.. Giving his Flesh to us .. and the Hierarchy of heavens .. unable to comprehend the wisdom and goodness of God .. and our response .. nothing we say or do can befit our Maker .. nothing but just Alleluia .... unceasingly . I too am lost for words.. only Silent Adoration

A Big Thank you to Marcus the conductor for choosing this hymn for the season of Advent. It may not be the most popular hymn for Advent, but spiritually and theologically, it dwarves many of modern composition we have (nothing against them I swear) There's really something "magical" about these words and tune, that transports us to a time, a place, an atmosphere , that is NOT close, but closer to what an experience of the ultimate may be, perhaps a glimpse of what Moses felt when he encountered the burning bush.

Author's Note

I don't remember singing this song ever yet the tune and title remained firmly etched in my memory. Did I play it in one of my childhood piano books ? Can't be sure.

Yet this was the first hymn that came to my mind when I reflected on All Souls Day. A day we remember ones we loved and lost , and yet will see again. This is our faith, that in our Lord Jesus, who came to save us, that we will see each other again, this time, no more pain or suffering ever. No more separation.

Musically, I didn't want it neither too sad and gloomy , nor too cheery cut time country. Wanted it to be hopeful and encouraging. Something I'd hum to myself in my last hours on Earth. Perhaps an upbeat style to a bluesy harmonica?

Doing this for the first time for mass.
